Santiago: Rescue teams have begun to search for survivors after one of the largest earthquakes on record killed at least 300 people in Chile and sent giant waves roaring across the Pacific Ocean.
In an address to the nation, President Michelle Bachelet said two million Chileans had been affected by the 8.8-magnitude earthquake, however after touring the worst-hit areas by plane, she found it hard to spell out the magnitude of the disaster.

SANTIAGO: A huge 8.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Chile early on Saturday killing at least 78 people, toppling buildings and triggering a tsunami threatening the Pacific rim of fire, officials said.
The massive quake plunged much of the Chilean capital, Santiago, into darkness as it snapped power lines and severed communications.
AFP journalists spoke of walls and masonry collapsing while people in pyjamas fled onto the streets.
Television images showed destroyed or heavily damaged buildings and debris-strewn streets.

Islamabad: The United States has told Pakistan to put in place a uniform visa mechanism so that its diplomats and embassy staff stationed in Islamabad do not face any difficulty in carrying out their work in the country.
In a statement issued by the US embassy’s Office of Public Affairs here, US Ambassador Anne Patterson said Washington wants that American officials do not face any problems in their work.
“We look forward to creation of a visa mechanism that will enable US officials do their jobs without interference,” Patterson said.

Santiago: A massive earthquake on the coast of Chile has killed at least 47 people, flattening buildings and triggering a tsunami.
The 8.8-magnitude quake, the country’s largest in 25 years, shook the capital Santiago for a minute and half at 3:34am (0634 GMT) today.
A tsunami warning has been extended across the Pacific rim, including most of Central and South America and as far as Australia and Antarctica.
The Chilean media is reporting that at least 17 people died and president Michelle Bachelet has declared a “state of catastrophe” in the country.
