4 American troops killed by bomb in Afghanistan

Kabul: NATO says four American troops have been killed in a roadside bomb explosion in eastern Afghanistan.

Tuesday’s deaths come amid a particularly bloody period for American forces in the country, with 18 service members killed since Saturday to bring this month’s total to 53. Another member of the international coalition whose nationality has not been released was killed on Monday.
July was the deadliest month for U.S. troops in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion, with 66 killed.

President Zardari arrives in Sochi for four nation summit

Sochi: President Asif Ali Zardari arrived in the Russian town of Sochi early Wednesday morning to participate in the four nation summit of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Russia later today.

The President was received at Sochi airport by Mayor of Sochi, Pakistan’s ambassador to Russia Khalid Khattak, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and other senior officers.
The President will also hold bilateral meetings with Presidents of Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Russia before returning to Islamabad later today.

NATO rocket killed 52 Afghan civilians: Afghan Govt

Helmand: A rocket attack by NATO-lead foreign forces killed 52 civilians in southern Afghanistan, President Karzai’s office said in a statement on Monday. “52 civilians, including women and children, were martyred in an attack carried out by NATO and ISAF forces in Helmand province,” the statement said.

Karzai strongly condemned the attack and called for international troops to increase their efforts to stop civilian causalities in their military operations.
The attack took place on Friday in Helmand’s Sangin district, Daud Ahmadi, the provincial governor’s spokesman, said.

US condemns the leakage of US military files

Washington: The United States strongly condemns the disclosure of classified information by individuals and organizations which could put the lives of Americans and our partners at risk, and threaten our national security.

In all, some 92,000 documents were released by the web whistleblower Wikileaks, containing previously untold details of the Afghan war through Pentagon files and field reports spanning from 2004 to 2010.

Admiral Mike Mullen arrives in Pakistan

Islamabad: Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States (US) arrived here on Saturday.

This visit to Pakistan is part of the regular bilateral consultations between the U.S. and Pakistan, said a statement issued by the US embassy.
Admiral Mullen is scheduled to meet with General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of the Army Staff and General Tariq Majid, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and other Pakistani leaders during his stay in Pakistan.

5 US troops die in blasts in southern Afghanistan

Kabul: Five American troops died Saturday in bombings in southern Afghanistan where international forces are stepping up the fight against the Taliban, officials said.

Four of the victims died in a single blast, NATO said in a statement without specifying nationalities nor providing further details. A fifth service member was killed in a separate attack in the south, NATO said.
U.S. officials confirmed all five were Americans. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity under rules regarding casualty identification.
